All NCI Stations are staffed by volunteer watchkeepers. We train new watchkeepers at the station during normal watches, where an experienced watchkeeper will adopt a trainee as their mentor. There is no pressure on completion of the training – each new recruit may take as long as they need to reach the level of competency required to be certified as a qualified watchkeeper. We recognize that each individual will join with different life skills and come from a background that may not be of a maritime nature.
